En plein air. Arles, France. The ancient theatre, in the middle of the historic town, is still used for concerts and plays. This was painted in winter outside the gate as you need a ticket to enter even when no entertainment is being presented. I used my ticket on a rainy day. The guard wouldn't let me in to paint the next day, so I painted outside the wall. When he left work and saw I was really a painter, he invited me to come back the next day to paint. Unfortunately I had to get the train back to Paris. The preparation section was in the foreground, and separated by the columns from the stage. The circular stone steps are the seats. Today the village is build up right outside the theatre gates.
Of note, when Arles was run by the Romans in 123 BC. Their rules of good government included that their new citizens have good food, good water and good entertainment.
